INTERVIEW: Motion Picture Soundtrack

RHV: Tell us who you are and where you're from?.
We are Motion Picture Soundtrack, a 4-piece alt. rock band from Kent.

RHV: Describe your music.
Moving, widescreen, cinematic songs that twist and turn from dark to beautiful to uplifting over the course of our debut album 'The Shapes We Fear Are Of Our Own'.

RHV: Tell us how the band formed in three sentences.
Brothers Alastair and Graeme Blackwood began the foundations to Motion Picture Soundtrack as early as 1999. Nick Watts joined the line-up after meeting Alastair at University studying music. Line-up completed in 2005 when old college friend Will Hasler joined on bass guitar shortly afterwards.

RHV: What did you do before you were in a band?
Achieve puberty

RHV: List the first CDs/records each of you bought.
Alastair - Erasure's 'Run To the Sun'
Nick - Status Quo 'Rocking All Over the World
Will - Celine Dion 'My Heart Will Go On'
Graeme - 'Jurassic Park' soundtrack

RHV: What's the band up to over the next few months?
Promoting the release of our debut album 'The Shapes We Fear Are Of Our Own' on March 1st, touring across the UK, drinking tea.

RHV: Best item of fan mail you've ever received?
A review we got that favourably compared us to Pink Floyd and the legendary track 'Comfortably Numb'...

RHV: What music do you have on repeat in the tourbus?
Sigur Rós - Untitled
Moby - Wait For Me (ambient mix)
U2 - Achtung Baby
Cliff Martinez - Solaris (soundtrack)
Various - Heat (soundtrack)
Craig Armstrong - Piano Works
Thomas Newman - The Shawshank Redemption (soundtrack)
Mew - Frengers
Arcade Fire – Funeral

RHV: What gear do you use?
Gibson Les Paul and Fender Telecaster guitars. Epiphone Thunderbird bass guitar. Mesa Boogie Dual Rectifier Roadster and Nomad amplifiers. Sound City bass amplifier, Remo drums kit, Fishermans Friend liquor...
...and pretty much anything we can get hold of to add texture or colour to the music... (pianos, Tibetan bells, synths, strums etc).

RHV: What's your best on tour story?
Gate-crashing someone’s birthday party just next to a hostel we stayed at in Copenhagen when recording 'The Shapes We Fear Are Of Our Own'. The night ended up with us & half the party bundling Graeme as he was sleeping in the buff (he left early!) before being entertained by an interesting Nordic game named ‘Stag’ where two challengers would stand a few feet away from each other and then proceed to smash heads together until one was literally knocked out... We ended up being chased out by the local English haters just before the hostel reopened at 7am...

RHV: What do you demand on your rider?
Copious amounts of Jack Daniels, Tuborg, Jelly Babies and to rehydrate afterwards - bottled water...

RHV: What's your website?
www.motionpicturesoundtrack.com
